Who lessons are for

Never fly fished before? Perfect. This is the friendly entry point.

Fly fishing can feel intimidating from the outside — too much gear, too many knots, too many fly names. A private lesson keeps it simple. Shayne works at your pace, explains what matters, and helps you build enough confidence to actually enjoy your Dullstroom fishing day.

Couples + friends

Learn together privately.

Ideal for two people wanting a relaxed Dullstroom activity without joining a crowded clinic or feeling rushed through the basics.

Improving angler

Fix what is costing you fish.

Work on casting accuracy, leader control, fly choice, drag, dry-dropper decisions and reading where trout are likely to feed.

What you learn

A practical on-water lesson, not a complicated lecture.

The lesson is built around real fishing situations. You learn the basics first, then apply them on Dullstroom trout water where wind, light, water clarity and fish behaviour shape the decisions in front of you.

Set up the rod with confidence.

Understand the fly rod, reel, line, leader, tippet and fly so the setup no longer feels confusing. Shayne keeps the technical detail useful, simple and relevant to trout fishing.

Build a simple casting foundation.

Learn basic casting, roll casts, wind-friendly angles, line control and quieter presentation. The aim is not perfection — it is getting you fishing properly and safely.

Choose flies without guessing.

Learn when to consider dries, emergers, nymphs or a dry-dropper setup, and how fly size, colour, depth and movement affect your chances on stillwater trout.

Read the water like an angler.

Understand weed beds, drop-offs, channels, cruising trout, rise forms and wind lanes so you know where to cast and why that area is worth your time.

Hook, fight and release trout properly.

Learn how to manage pressure, use the net, handle fish carefully and release trout responsibly — especially important for private stillwater venues.

How the day works

The lesson is private, calm and built around your level.

A fly fishing lesson with Shayne is not a crowded group clinic. It is a private coaching day for one or two anglers, planned around your experience, the weather, the water and what you actually want to learn.

Laverpa is often used because it offers proper stillwater trout scenarios for coaching. Final venue, rod fees, access and meeting details are confirmed before the trip, so the day is planned properly before payment is arranged.
