Meet Your Fly Fishing Guide – Shayne

Johannesburg-based, dry-fly focused, and obsessed with the small details that turn good days into memorable ones on Laverpa and other Dullstroom waters.

Updated: February 2026 · Guiding Laverpa, Valley of the Rainbow & selected Dullstroom stillwaters.

Who You’ll Be Fishing With

I’m Shayne, the guide behind Immersive Angling. I’m based in Johannesburg but spend as much time as possible on the water around Dullstroom – especially at Laverpa and Valley of the Rainbow.

My trips are built around dry-fly and sight-fishing wherever conditions allow. That might mean crawling along a weedline, waiting for a subtle rise, or watching for the faintest movement under a CDC emerger. If that kind of detail appeals to you, you’re in the right place.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced angler looking to refine your presentation, my goal is the same: slow things down, keep you relaxed, and pass on the small things that actually move the needle on stillwater trout.

Waters I Guide Most Often

I’d rather know a handful of venues intimately than be “okay” everywhere. These are the waters I fish and guide the most – I keep close track of stocking cycles, hatches, and pressure.

Laverpa

Classic Dullstroom stillwaters with clear water, weedlines, and regular trout movement. Perfect for dry/dropper and technical sight-fishing when the light and wind line up.

Typical approach: long leaders, slim dries, quiet banks, and patient shots at cruisers.

Valley of the Rainbow

A scenic estate outside Dullstroom with multiple dams and seasonal river pools. Great option if you want variety in water types over a weekend.

Dams for consistent action; winter river pools for more technical sight-fishing.

Other Options

From time to time, I also guide selected private stillwaters and seasonal venues by arrangement, depending on conditions and availability.

If you have a specific water in mind, mention it on your booking form and we can chat through options.

How I Guide & What to Expect

I’m not interested in rushing you around the water or barking instructions all day. A good guided session should feel calm, focused, and enjoyable – with plenty of time to ask questions and understand why we’re doing what we’re doing.

  • • We start by talking about your experience, goals, and any nerves you might have.
  • • We go over rigging, leader setups, and fly choice together – nothing is “too basic” to ask.
  • • On the water, I focus on presentation, angles, and reading trout behaviour.
  • • I’ll often have you repeat a certain shot or drift, so it becomes muscle memory.
  • • If conditions shift, we adjust – change flies, angles, or even banks entirely.

My job is to handle logistics, access, flies and timing so that you can actually relax into the fishing, not stress about whether you’re “doing it right”.

A Typical Guided Day

  1. 1. Meet-up & coffee
We meet at Mavungana Fly Shop, pay the venue fees and run through your gear checklist. Leave for Laverpa
  2. 2. Setup & short skills session
Quick session on casting, leader layout and presentation before we start covering water properly.
  3. 3. Fishing key zones
We work weedlines, drop-offs and likely lanes methodically, adjusting tactics as conditions change.
  4. 4. Debrief & next steps
At the end of the day, we recap what worked, what didn’t, and what to focus on in your own fishing.

Who My Trips Are For

You don’t need to be an expert to book a guide. In fact, many of my favourite days on the water have been with complete beginners or anglers returning after a long break.

Beginners

If you’ve never held a fly rod, that’s okay. We’ll take it slowly, cover the basics, and focus on building confidence without jargon or pressure.

Improvers

Maybe you’ve done a few trips, watched some YouTube, and want to turn “random success” into something more consistent. We’ll build a solid stillwater approach together.

Experienced Anglers

If you already fish regularly, we can make the day more technical – refining presentations, experimenting with dries and emergers, and hunting specific windows.

Not sure where you fit? Use the booking form to tell me where you’re at and what you’d like from the day.
