Frequently Asked

A few quick answers from a Johannesburg-based guide who has been fishing and guiding around Dullstroom since 2007.

Do I need my own fly fishing gear?
Not necessarily. If you don’t have tackle, mention it in your message and I’ll let you know what can be arranged and what you might want to bring along (hat, sunglasses, layers, etc.).
Can complete beginners book?
Absolutely. I work with a lot of first-timers. We’ll start with the basics – how to hold the rod, simple casting and what the fish are actually eating – and build your confidence at your pace.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Trips run in most normal Dullstroom weather (wind, cold, mist). If it’s genuinely unsafe or unfishable, we’ll look at rescheduling where possible in line with the booking terms.
Do you only guide at Laverpa?
Laverpa is one of my primary venues because of the water, fish and limited daily numbers. If you have other Dullstroom waters in mind, mention them and I’ll let you know what’s possible.

What our guests say

Since 2007 I’ve been guiding anglers on stillwaters and streams – from first-time fly fishers to seasoned dry-fly addicts. Here’s what some of them had to say after a day on the water.

★★★★★ 5.0 average from recent trips

“Hands down the best guiding experience I’ve had in Dullstroom. Calm, professional, and somehow always one step ahead of the fish.”

“We arrived not knowing how to hold a fly rod and left actually understanding what we were doing. Shayne broke everything down simply, never made us feel silly for asking questions, and celebrated every small win with us. Perfect intro to fly fishing.”
