Why Book a Guide at Valley of the Rainbow?

There’s a difference between simply fishing Valley of the Rainbow and fishing it with a guide who knows the moods of the water, the wind shifts and how the trout behave in each dam and pool.

Local Water Knowledge

We spend our time on a handful of carefully chosen venues around Dullstroom. You benefit from up-to-date intel on where fish are holding, what they’re feeding on and which presentations are currently working.

Dry-Fly Focused Coaching

We specialise in dry-fly and light nymph tactics. Expect coaching on casting angles, drifts, mends and reading subtle takes — not just being told where to stand.

Low-Stress, High-Fun Days

From helping choose flies and leaders to netting fish and taking photos, we keep the admin light so you can focus on the takes, the scenery and the company.

A Typical Guided Day

  1. Meet at the estate , run through goals, gear check and water plan.
  2. Start on the most suitable water for conditions — often a dam with good light and structure.
  3. Work through presentations: dries, dry & dropper or small nymphs depending on signs and hatches.
  4. Midday break for lunch, pattern and spot changes as needed.
  5. Afternoon focus on light-driven windows, wind lanes and evening rises.

Perfect For

  • Families and first-timers who want a gentle introduction to fly fishing.
  • Intermediate anglers wanting to sharpen dry-fly and sight-fishing skills.
  • Photographers and nature lovers who want clear water, misty mornings and good light.
  • Couples’ weekends or small corporate teams looking for something quieter than the city.

Laverpa vs Rainbow Valley – which Dullstroom venue suits you?

Both venues fish well and we guide them regularly. The right choice depends on how you like to fish and who’s joining you. Here’s a simple side-by-side comparison to help you decide.

Classic Stillwater · Private Day Water

Laverpa

A focused stillwater venue with clear banks, weedlines and frequent sight-fishing. Perfect for technical dry/dropper work and anglers who want to concentrate on one water for the day.

  • Strong focus on dry-fly and dry/dropper tactics.
  • Excellent for learning to read structure & weed edges.
  • Works well for 1–2 anglers who want a more “technical” day.
  • Easy day-trip from Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Best pick if you want a pure stillwater mission and to really lean into dry-fly skills.

Estate Venue · Dams & Seasonal River

Rainbow Valley (Valley of the Rainbow)

A trout estate with multiple dams, a managed river section and on-site accommodation. Great for mixed groups, couples’ weekends and anglers who want scenery and variety, not just a single dam.

  • Dams plus seasonal river pools when levels allow.
  • Estate setting with walks, birdlife and non-angler options.
  • Works well for couples, families and small groups.
  • Ideal if you’re staying over and want water on your doorstep.

Best pick if you’re planning a weekend away with fishing, nature and relaxed estate vibes in one place.

Still not sure? When you send a booking enquiry, mention whether you prefer Laverpa, Rainbow Valley or simply “best venue for conditions” and we’ll recommend the right water for your dates.
